As AI continues to develop at a rapid pace, its impact on human employment has become a hot topic around the world. During our debate session on May 30, members tackled the question of whether AI threatens job security or opens doors to new opportunities.
Proposition (AI is not a threat):
Proponents argued that AI, rather than replacing humans entirely, actually complements human effort in many industries. They pointed out that:
- AI systems, while efficient, still need human oversight to address unexpected errors and improve performance.
- The rise of AI encourages innovation, giving people more chances to become entrepreneurs and create startups that wouldn’t have been possible before.
- With the global economy evolving, AI can become a powerful tool that empowers the workforce—rather than diminishing it.
Opposition (AI is a threat):
Those against the proposition emphasized the dangers of rapid automation, especially for low-skill labor:
- Many factory jobs and repetitive tasks are already being automated, leaving workers unemployed and with few opportunities to retrain.
- Without proper education or access to technology, a large portion of the population will be excluded from AI-driven industries.
- The loss of jobs could lead to larger social issues—such as reduced income, inability to support families, and a long-term population decline.
The discussion revealed a split in perspectives: some students viewed AI as a catalyst for progress, while others warned of the growing gap between those who can adapt to new technology and those who cannot.
